Polworth Road Homes
History
The original almshouses were built in 1832 by the daughters of Henry Thrale, a local landowner and businessman. Located on Streatham High Road adjacent to the Police Station, the original houses were replaced in the 1930s by a new estate of ten homes on Polworth Road.
The site underwent a major redevelopment in 2013. This included retaining eight of the locally listed 1930s almshouses, which were upgraded and extended, alongside two purpose-built blocks comprising nine apartments.
Designed by architects BPTW, the scheme was shortlisted in the RICS Awards 2018, the Housing Design Awards 2014 and, in 2016, the NLA Awards and London Planning Awards.
Timeline of the Thrale Almshouses
Today
The homes in Polworth Road were opened in 2015, marking a new phase in the long history of Thrale Almshouses in Streatham.
Today the 17 homes are managed by Teachers' Housing Association under the governance of our board of trustees.
We are pleased to report that we did not receive any complaints as defined under the Housing Ombudsman Complaints Handling Code in 2023/2024. We work closely with our residents and our housing management provider, Teachers’ Housing Association, to ensure that any issues are resolved quickly to prevent any complaints from occurring.
We will continue to do this tirelessly for our tenants. We have adopted Teachers’ self-assessment and have not produced an annual report as we have had zero complaints.
